EMDR Therapy
EMDR therapy in Vancouver for distressing experiences that still hijack the present, no matter how much you've talked them through.
What it is
EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy for memories that won't settle.
EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is one of the most researched treatments for trauma and distressing experiences. When something overwhelming happens, the brain can't always file the memory away properly, so it stays raw: looping back with the same images, feelings, and body sensations as if it were still happening now.
EMDR helps the brain do the processing it couldn't finish at the time, so the memory can finally settle into the past where it belongs.
How it works
During EMDR, you briefly bring a difficult memory to mind while following a back-and-forth motion with your eyes, or gentle taps or tones — what's called bilateral stimulation. This appears to free up the brain's natural ability to reprocess, much as it does during dream sleep, so the memory can lose its charge.
You don't have to relive the event in detail or describe every part out loud. Much of the work happens internally, at a pace you control, and the aim is for the memory to become something you can recall without it taking you over.
How I work
EMDR isn't a technique I run at you. It's woven into a steady, trusting relationship: we spend real time building safety and inner resources before going near anything hard, and you stay in the driver's seat the whole way through.
Because I also work relationally and at depth, EMDR sits alongside the rest of the work rather than apart from it. We can slow down, check in, and make sense of whatever surfaces, together.
Where this leads
When a memory finishes processing, it stops ambushing you. The images soften, the body settles, and the beliefs that got locked in along with it — "it was my fault," "I'm not safe" — can loosen and update. Most people describe feeling lighter, steadier, and far less ruled by something that used to feel ever-present.
